The Biographical and historical thriller film is actually the adaptation of the human rights activist and Cambodian author “Loung Ung’s” heartfelt memoir of surviving the lethal Khmer Rouge Regime from the year of 1975 to 1978. The story is actually told through her eyes, from the small age of five at the time of Khmer coming into the power to the age of nine. The film showcases the devotion and the invincible spirit of the Loung family who struggles and fights hard to sustain together during the fatal Khmer Rouge all these years.  The story line of the film is based on the non-fiction book of Ung, named as “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers”, which eventually got published in 2000. After reading the whole memoir of Ung, the director and one of the producers of the film, Angelina Jolie contacted Ung from a long decade and now they have turned into the best buddies.

The whole film was shot at the location of Cambodia between the year of 2015 (November) and 2016 (December). Till date, it is the largest movie which has been ever made in the country with the fact of filming the entire film in the Khmer language. Even the whole crew was full of Cambodians artisans, technicians, craft people and 3,500 background actors. Many actors of the film mark their first-time appearance in the film. Srey Moch Sareum is the lead actor who played the Loung Ung role from the age of five to nine.
